Isn’t she purty? I took her in for an oil change (full synthetic for less than $41 with coupon) and found that she needs work - rear brake pads. Hopefully they’ll be easier to do than the fronts which, to be honest, weren’t that bad. I just don’t want to do them in winter, like I did with the fronts, so I may put off the job until spring. Given that I only drive about 5,000 miles per year I can probably get away with it.

Periodically do some ebrake turns in the snow to ensure that the rear pads are still working...just to be safe

Brake pad jobs are super easy. Brake pad jobs in winter though? For me at least, that's a big nope. I can only imagine what it'd do to my frail bony ass hands.

Rears aren’t bad. Just rent the tool that turns the piston in as it depresses it and you’re golden.

This, forget that and you’ll end up needing a new caliper.

You only need this if that’s how they run the parking brake right?

Or tear off the dust boot which is even worse imo: https://oppositelock.kinja.com/3-hrs-2-trips-to-the-shop-4-screwdrivers-2-nose-clip-1833960316

With the amount you drive I would just wait for nice weather. Rear brakes don’t take much abuse.

While brakes are important, they are a wear item and don’t indicate a shitty car :p

Get the Raybestos ELemenbt3 Opti-Cal calipers. They are all-new not reman

Yeah, if the parking brake is separate you don’t need to turn the piston  as it retracts.

Rear pads on my Mazda3 were not that bad. I think 30 minutes a side and I used needle nose pliers to turn in the pistons, you also have to unhook the parking brake.

If you only drive 5k miles a year, I'd wait until spring.

I absolutely love this car and don’t think it’s quite ready for the scrap heap just yet . Other than an engine mount that was replaced under warranty this car has been perfect, needing only regular maintenance and wear items (tires, battery, brakes, wipers). In over 36 years of driving I’ve never experienced anything like this, but then again, all of my other cars were German, with one free beat-to-shit Windstar thrown in the mix.

The last rear discs I did were on the 525i, and that had a separate drum brake for the parking brake. This one will be a new experience, but with the words of wisdom you guys have shared it should be a simple job.
